Since 1962 Csehy Summer School of Music has provided classical and traditional sacred music training for junior and senior high school campers from all over the country and around the world. In 2011, our campers came from 19 sates and 10 countries. The goal of the camp is to learn and to live the compatibility of musical excellence and Christian commitment. Held on the beautiful campus of Houghton College, in Houghton, NY, Csehy provides private lessons in all the band and orchestra instruments as well as piano, voice, and classical guitar. Each camper receives two private lessons each week and has daily ensemble rehearsals in band, orchestra and/or handbells. The music faculty is carefully chosen to insure that each camper has the best possible instruction and is well prepared for recitals and concerts. Each week concludes with a Saturday afternoon concert featuring the orchestra, band, handbell choir, and vocal choir. Each camper sings in the vocal choir and plays in the band, orchestra, or handbell choir. Each camper also takes classes in music theory with placement based on experience and aptitude. All of the faculty, staff, and counselors are devoted Christians. Campers attend chapel each morning and a less formal sing time each evening. Each day ends with counselors leading small group devotions where campers are challenged to examine their relationship with Jesus Christ. Each weekend features a bonfire where campers are encouraged to share spiritual decisions they have made during the week. Campers also have the opportunity to minister in local churches and nursing homes as part of a Csehy ministry team. Campers have free time each day to choose non-musical activities in which they participate. Counselors organize special events such as Christmas in July, crazy hair day, twin day, etc. to encourage campers to make as many friends as possible. Campers always look forward to skit night each session to show their creativity and craziness. A visit to nearby Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, is a highlight for campers and staff. Campers are housed in college dorms with 6-9 campers per counselor. A nurse is on campus 24/7, and the local rescue squad is less than 3 minutes away. Campus security is always on duty. Campers follow a strictly enforced curfew. All campers agree to follow the dress code and live up to all Csehy standards of conduct. Campers are encouraged to get to know as many other campers as possible, and spending too much time with just one other person is discouraged. Over the past 50+ years, thousands of young musicians have been a part of the “Csehy Experience”. Many look back and see it as a turning point in their life, both musically and spiritually. We like to call Csehy Summer School of Music the summer camp that lasts a lifetime. Choose Csehy to help you grow musically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. It is a decision that you will never regret!
