Unlike other day camps where children are passed from teacher to teacher, children at FTF spend the entire day with Laura in an unhurried experience of being in a beautiful, peaceful place, basking in the joys of creativity, and growing acquainted with a small group of peers. Each day follows a gentle rhythm beginning with a walk through the slanted light of the wakening forest. We then go inside the dance studio for a movement journey to live or recorded harp music, after which we sit for a brief session of watercolor painting. An organic snack outdoors readies the children for a nature crafting experience, oftentimes done in the forest, such as building fairy or woodland creature houses, making boats to send down the creek, sewing or dyeing clothes to wear, making headdresses and magic rods, decorating the trees and other experiences in crafting with natural materials. After this there is a cooperative game, staging of simple plays or skits, a wade in the pond, or time for hearing a story or learning a song. Lunchtime by the pond allows for contemplation of the lazily sunbathing fish. Then we have a parting walk through the woods. The camp weeks for older children (age 7-12) involve more focused attention to creating and memorizing dances and skits and the preparation of a festive sharing with family on the last day of camp. Fairy Tales and tales of fairies appeal to girls and boys alike as images of the spirit of nature and the realm of the imagination. Children seem to have an inexhaustible enthusiasm for creating things from natural materials. Moving from their natural interest in the spirit of the forest, this camp allows children to spend time playing and crafting in nature as we might imagine fairies and animals do - working together as a group and using our wits and wisdom about nature to create beauty and fun.
