Girls First! at The Madeira School

Girls First! offers something no other summer camp does –a non-graded hands-on academic class adventure (choose from Acting, Creating Writing, Culinary Exploration, Digital Photography, Fashion, Forensics, or Veterinary Science) and our girl power program helping girls from around the world grow in real life skills to make them ready for a new school year.

Girls have 5-6 50-minutes classes where teachers keep the classes interesting with activities and projects that make learning fun (processing fingerprints, creating your own truffle recipe, practicing lines from Alice in Wonderland or reading animal x-rays). Each class spends at least one day on a field trip to places in and around Washington, D.C. making memories and enhancing their classroom learning.

Concentrating on their chosen class, girls explore their subject via dynamic classroom work and experiential learning – projects, hands-on activities and field trips. Each day girls explore their subject in 5- 6 50-minute classes and then enjoy afternoon and evening activities like arts and crafts, fitness and activities that help develop the whole girl (in 2013 that included a speaker on Internet Safety, making smart choices, and activities like personality tests and brainstorming new products.) Each class takes at least two field trips based on the topics they study in class. Day students begin their day at 8:30 a.m. and complete it at 4:15 p.m. (after classes) or 6:30 p.m. (after enjoying afternoon activities and dinner with their friends).  After classes, the fun continues with social activities, games, sports, and field trips. As a part of camp orientation, all campers challenge themselves on our on-campus challenge/ropes course – an adventure not to be missed!

During daily camp meeting time, girls learn from speakers and activities that focus on skills for life – personality tests, making good choices, goal setting, media literacy, Internet safety and making introductions are some of the topics we have covered in the past.

On the weekends, resident students spend Saturday in Washington, D.C. exploring the city, attending the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, participating in a scavenger hunt, sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying lunch in the city. On Sunday, girls return to D.C. to tour the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, have lunch and enjoy a performance of The Lion King before heading back to campus for more fun like milkshakes and manicures, or an Iron Chef competition.

Chaperoned airport transportation is available to/from Dulles International and Reagan Washington National airports.
