The Deep River Science Academy

The research experience offered to high school students each summer by The Deep River Science Academy (DRSA) is unique in Canada and possibly the world. For six weeks each summer, high school students work within real research teams at one of our partner laboratories. Each student works under the guidance of a university-level research assistant and the supervision of a scientist or engineer. Students do not watch demonstration projects; they are full participants contributing to authentic research. The Deep River Science Academy offers students a choice of two programs. The first is a classroom/research combination program. As well as participating for over half the time on a real R&D project at one of the host research centers, students cover the classroom and laboratory work. The second option is a full research program. Students who choose this option have already earned the relevant classroom credit and devote their time exclusively to an R&D project. The Deep River camp grants successful students in either stream two high school credits. Students live in residence under adult supervision for the entire six-week DRSA session, eating together and participating in common recreational activities. Without fail, meeting and getting to know like-minded teens from across Canada has been one of the most important facets of the DRSA experience for the students The DRSA is a validated private school authorized by the Ontario Ministry of Education to offer credits toward an Ontario secondary school diploma.
