Summer Camp Character is Destiny

Character is destiny proclaims the old adage.

Character is hard-won, and accomplished through decision making and sacrifice. Excellent character leads to an excellent future.

Character is the keystone of summer camp. Camp administrators agree that it takes year-round character to assume the various responsibilities involved in financing a camp and enrolling campers and staff. Repairs are performed and grounds are maintained in the off-season; marketing and advertising campaigns are mounted; websites are re-developed.

Character in the summer camp industry is a deep source of inspiration for counselors and CITs. Camps request character references and perform background checks to insure high quality in their staff. Talent, skills, and experience are all vital components in hiring summer staff, but the most important asset is character.

Character in summer staff ensures camper safety, enjoyment, and cabin unity. It translates into parent satisfaction and repeat campers. The most successful way to determine counselor character is through repeat hiring. Staff that has provided a year or more of loyal service, and have proven an ability to work well with children, can generally be trusted. They are a known quantity.

For campers, character is an exploration into the depths of challenging activities and bonding with cabin mates. The physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of their characters unite within the natural environment of camp.

Summer camp 2008 will be another character-building year it's destined.
