Camp Staff will be employed from June 11th-August 13th, 2007.

 

What is CYO Summer Camp?

CYO Summer Camp is dedicated to providing a playful, fun-filled, challenging summer camp experience for 9-16 year old campers. CYO Summer Camp helps youth discover their self-worth and explore their connectivity to nature and spirituality. Campers enjoy action packed days of canoeing, archery, outdoor adventure hikes and ocean excursions. CYO Camp is located 2 hours north of San Francisco in Occidental, California on 216 acres of beautiful coastal redwood forest.

 

Ways to be involved!

Head Counselors: Head Counselors lead a group of Summer Camp and Specialty Counselors who are responsible for a particular age range of children.  With a team, they will coordinate and lead activities, and are responsible for the overall camp experience.

Specialty Counselors: Share your skills and passions with us at camp! In addition to general counselor duties, specialty counselors will also help lead distinctive activities in their area of expertise. We are looking for certified life guards, musicians, artists, craft specialists, athletes etc.

Summer Camp Counselors: Counselors are the core of the Summer Camp experience. A counselor will create a safe, positive, and playful environment for 8-10 young people for 4 ten day sessions. Counselors are responsible for the well-being of campers, and help facilitate activities that stimulate youth physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

Summer Camp Coordiantor:  Oversees 3 Head Counselors and Counselor in Training Coordinator. Works with the Associate Director of Programs to ensure effective program and activity delivery.  Must be 21 or older.

Counselor in Training (CIT) Coordinator:  Oversees the training and summer work experience for all Counselors in Training.

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform these jobs successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 (Minimum Education and Experience)

·        Must be 18 years of age or high school graduate.

·        Must become certified in First Aid/CPR before June 11, 2007.

·        Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.

·        Ability to interact with all age levels.

·        Ability to work cooperatively with other staff to build a sense of safety and community for every camper. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

·        Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

·        Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Some physical requirements of these positions could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching;  requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities;  requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs;  willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities;  and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.

·        Live and work in an outdoor rustic environment of a redwood forest in close-quartered community setting.

·        Frequently exposed to uneven forest terrain, outside elements, and weather conditions.

·        Occasional late night responsibilities.

·        Will work around children and staff with health issues.
