Camp Tuhsmeheta Camp Director Job Description

 

 

Summary of Duties:  This is a full time position located at 10500 Lincoln Lake Rd., Greenville, MI. This person serves as the Camp Director for children and youth who are blind or have visual impairments.  The main goal of the camp is to provide a fun and educational setting which promotes independence and quality of life for children and adults with visual impairments.  As Camp Director, this person is responsible to Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind, Executive Director, for supervision and oversight of day-to-day operations, including but not limited to, record keeping, hiring, discipline, and staff development for Camp Tuhsmeheta.  Other responsibilities include program development, outreach, fiscal and budgetary operations, and development and implementation of educational opportunities for children with visual impairments. The Camp Director provides programming for families with children and/or adults with visual impairments and designated program development activities as determined by OUB’s strategic plan.

 

Duties:

 

§         Serve as an advocate for Camp Tuhsmeheta.

§         Develop and/or oversee, with assistance from the ED, program goals and objectives.

§         Minimum of one weekend event per month through the winter months.

§         Traditional residential 10 week Summer Camp program.

§         Manage existing record keeping procedures to track applications for staff.

§         Hire, train, mentor, coach, and discipline camp staff.

§         Schedule staff training, working hours, time off, program/activity assignments and team building activities.

§         Promote clear communication between staff members.

§         Provide clear expectations of conduct for staff.

§         Manage staff conflicts.

§         Facilitate training and evaluation programs for camp staff.

§         Responsible for the day-to-day running of the camp; provide for changes in programming or procedure as required to make daily activities run smoothly.

§         Oversee camp medical, kitchen, housekeeping and program staff.

§         Oversee development of programs and activities that teach and reinforce the expanded core curriculum for the education of blind and visually impaired children.

§         Design and execute organized chaos and fun.

§         Recruit, train and coach volunteers needed to support camp activities.

§         Complete all required reporting for licensing and accreditation organizations, (we are ACA accredited).

§         Manage established record keeping procedures to track applications for campers.

§         Meet special needs of campers.

§         Promote clear communication with parents and or guardians of campers.

§         Provide clear expectations of conduct for campers.

§         Manage all disciplinary issues with campers, including notification of parents as appropriate.

§         Be a role model in conduct and attitude at all times.

§         Perform other duties as assigned by the ED.

 

 Qualifications:

 

This position requires a highly motivated person who is passionate about improving the quality of life for persons with visual impairment.  Comfort with culture change and social change is a must for the person in this position.  Advocacy skills, inter-personal skills, excellent communication skills, creativity, initiative and the ability to motivate others are important.  Experience supervising, hiring, mentoring, and disciplining staff is essential.  Program development experience is preferred.  This position requires the following:

 

·        Must be at least 25 years of age.

·        Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, Recreation, Parks & Leisure services or other human services area. Bachelor’s degree in another area and a minimum of 24 weeks experience working with special needs populations will be considered.  Special consideration will be given to persons with Certification in Teaching, Orientation and Mobility, Rehabilitation for the Blind and Visually Impaired or practical experience running a camp.

·        Two seasons experience in a supervisory capacity in an organized camp setting.

·        Has attended a related professional development workshop in the last 3 years or is willing to attend a workshop.

·        Physical condition that permits active participation in camp activities, side-by-side with campers and staff. The ability to physically respond in an emergency situation.
