Camp Greenway Job Descriptions

 

Camp Greenway at the Madeira School is looking for energetic, fun and responsible college age adults to be apart of our camp for summer 2004.  We are looking to fill counselor, instructor and administrative positions.  Camp Greenway is a boys and girls camp ages 6-14 owned and operated by The Madeira School.  Camp Greenway will run from June 28-August 6 (6 weeks minus weekends) and you will also be required to attend a weekend orientation and training.  We are looking for 20 counselors’, 5 administrative staff members and 15 instructors for tennis, archery, arts &crafts, basketball, drama and music, games, nature and soccer.  Please see below for a description of each available job.  If you would like to receive an application please email Melody Hall at [email protected] or 703-556-8260.

 

JR. COUNSELOR

Purpose:  The primary objective of the Jr. Counselor position is be trained to create an environment, which affirms and supportively encourages each camper.  The counselor and Jr. Counselor will, by their very presence in a group, set the tone and direction for the camper’s experience.  Age requirement: at least 16yrs of age and a rising Jr. or Sr. in High School.

Specific Responsibilities:

·          Involvement with a specific group of campers on a rotating basis; training to direct their growth in social skills and the skills each activity develops.

·          Participating fully in each activity and encouraging each camper to do the same.

·          Supervising specific areas as assigned

·          General camp oversight: being concerned and responsible for the general safety of all campers whether assigned to you or not

·          Assisting in the management of your group in such a way that the personal effects (clothing, art projects, etc.) belonging to campers go home with them each day

·          Challenging yourself to learn about the many areas of camp and the possibilities each area might provide for your future involvement with the camp

·          Allowing yourself to learn from other staff members

·          Developing strong relationships and enhance spirit of staff members to promote an atmosphere of mutual support and cooperation

·          Attend all staff training and meetings

 

COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose:  The primary objective of the Counselor position is to create an environment, which affirms and supportively encourages each camper.  The Counselor will, by their very presence in a group, set the tone and direction for the experience each camper will have. 

Specific Responsibilities: 

·          Involvement with a specific group of campers; directing their growth in social skills and in the specific skills each activity requires

·          Participating fully in each activity and encouraging each camper to do the same

·          Supervising specific areas as assigned (i.e. carpool area, gym, etc)

·          Support the JR. counselor program by encouraging and helping to train JR. counselors

·          Being concerned and responsible for the general safety of all campers whether assigned to you or not and for the smooth operation of camp

·          Contacting the parents of each camper you’re in charge of at least once during their time at camp greenway either in person or by phone 

·          Supporting relations and communication among staff members to promote an atmosphere of support and mutual cooperation in the camp

·          Supervise and assist in planning campouts when and if your assigned group is participating

·          Support the CIT program by encouraging and helping to train CIT’s 

·          Attend schedules staff orientation and meetings

 

INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose:  The primary objective of the Instructor position is to provide a variety of same, yet challenging activities, appropriately structured for each age level, that afford skill development and wholesome fun.

Specific Responsibilities: 

·          Design and supervise activities that meet the standards above

·          Help train counselors who report to your activity in how best to assist you in that activity

·          Supervising specific areas as assigned (i.e. carpool area, gym, etc)

·          Being concerned and responsible for the general safety of all campers whether assigned to you or not and for the smooth operation of camp

·          Support the JR. counselor program by encouraging and helping to train JR. counselors

·          Support the CIT program by encouraging and helping to train CIT’s 

·          Maintain and inventory supplies for the activity assigned to you

·          Use planning periods to plan your own activity or assist other staff with their projects when needed

·          Developing strong relationships and enhance spirit of staff members to promote an atmosphere of mutual support and cooperation

·          Attend scheduled orientation and meetings

 

TRANSPORTATION & INSTRUCTOR DIRECTOR

Purpose:  The overall responsibility of the Transportation Coordinator is to develop & implement a transportation system using buses and vans in keeping with 1) brochure guidelines, 2) camper demand for appropriate bus stops, and 3) limits due to traffic congestion & distance from camp.   Responsible for staff development of instructors: monitoring communications between instructors & staff and assist with performance evaluations of instructors.  It is the equivalent of a nine-week position: camp and orientation, plus a maximum of an additional 80 hours on a mutually agreeable schedule.  Candidate needs to have a college degree.

 Specific Responsibilities:

·          Be informed on all aspects of camp transportation

·          With the help of the camp director hire bus drivers, and work with the camp director if disciplinary action or firing of a driver is  

necessary

·          Train bus drivers and ensure their certification and licensing according to Virginia state laws

·          Handle transportation requests and communicate with parents as to time and place of pick-up\drop-off

·          Establish bus stops/routes different than the brochure to accommodate reasonable demands from parents, Handle any

questions/comments/complaints concerning transportation and consult with the camp director if necessary

·          Monitor arrival and departure buses at camp and provide backup drivers/buses if a driver is late or a bus breaks down

·          Provide for general maintenance of buses/vans (i.e. adding oil, gasoline, check tire air pressure)

·          Provide administrative coverage at any accident scenes involving camp buses, and provide timely accident forms (i.e. filling out,

accuracy, signing, etc) to the camp administrative director for insurance needs 

·          Be available to the camp insurance company if any accidents occur

·          Keep track and adds and drops to the transportation list and give changes to the camp administrative director on a daily basis

·          Monitor program plan development & implemented for each activity

·          Responsible for the staff development of the Instructors

·          Monitor communications between instructors and staff

·          Assist with performance evaluations of Instructors

·          Attend scheduled orientation and meetings

 

CIT COORDINATOR

Purpose:  The overall responsibility of the CIT & Extended Day Coordinator is to develop and implement an effective and interesting program for older campers who would like to eventually be a camp staff member.  Also responsible for planning and staffing extended day program which last from 3:30 pm-6:00 pm.  It is the equivalent of a seven-week position: camp and orientation, plus a maximum of 40 hours on a mutually agreeable basis.  Candidate needs to have a high school degree.

Specific Responsibilities: 

·          Help (camp director) set-up CIT training.

·          To assist CIT’s in creating individual goals

·          To plan structured activities that expose CIT’s to JR. Counselor and Instructor responsibilities

·          To coordinate group-building activities which promote an atmosphere of mutual support and cooperation

·          To evaluate CIT’s at the end of the camp season

·          Must supervise carpool scheduling and staff responsibilities for it.

·          To assist the camp director in other areas as needed

·          To contact the parents of CIT’s at least once during the camp session

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & EXTENDED DAY

Purpose:  The overall responsibility of the Assistant Director for Program Development is to develop and implement an effective activities schedule and additional events within the day camp.  It is the equivalent of a ten-week position; camp and orientation plus a maximum of an additional 120 hours on a mutually agreeable schedule.  Candidate needs to have a college degree.

Specific Responsibilities:

·          To work with the camp director in determining the actual activities for the day camp

·          To set the activities schedule to balance activities among the appropriate groups 

·          To work with the camp director and assistant camp director for staff development in developing weekly meetings for staff

·          To set-up and manage campouts, (i.e. activities and any problems that may rise)

·          To assist the counselors/JR. counselors with the planning and implementation of off campus trips

·          To assist the camp director in handling camper parent’s concerns, requests, and general information

·          To assist the camp director in evaluations of the performance of staff members

·          To plan and implement special activities for the end of each session

·          To assist the camp director with Virginia State minimum licensing requirements

·          To attend scheduled orientation and meetings

·          To monitor extended day schedule.

·          To staff extended day and assign responsibilities (i.e. who is to be in charge of swimming, locker room, gym)

·          To attend all staff training and meetings

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Purpose:  The overall responsibility of the Assistant Director for Staff Development is to provide a training program for camp staff, which will facilitate a competent, professional staff.  It is the equivalent of a ten-week position; camp and orientation plus a maximum of an additional 120 hours on a mutually agreeable schedule.  Candidate needs to have a college degree.

Specific Responsibilities: 

·          To work with the camp director in planning staff meetings and training sessions

·          To monitor communications between counselors and Jr. counselors

·          To work with the other assistant director in managing the campouts,

·          To assist the camp director in handling camper parent’s concerns, requests, and general information

·          To assist the camp director in evaluations of the performance of staff members

·          To maintain a training manual for staff

·          To determine which counselor goes with which group of campers

·          To assist the camp director with Virginia State minimum licensing requirements

·          To assist the assistant director for program development with implementation of special activities

·          To be responsible for the training of the counselors and/or JR. counselors

·          To attend scheduled orientation and meetings

 

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Purpose:  Because of his/her extensive telephone contact with parents, the Administrative Assistant should be able to interact with the parents in a mature, calm and helpful manner.  The camp administrative assistant is also responsible for the smooth operation of the camp office.  It is the equivalent of an eight-week position: camp and orientation plus a maximum of 40 hours on a mutually agreeable schedule.  Candidate needs to have a college degree.

Specific Responsibilities:

·          Maintain a daily camper absentee list

·          Call parents concerning the camper’s absence

·          Maintain a camper late arrival/early departure list

·          Assist the Transportation Director with session route lists, mailings, and phone calls

·          Answer the camp phone; send camp brochures to parents

·          Coordinate the distribution of messages to staff and campers

·          Coordinate the use of substitute staff and volunteers with guidance from the Camp Director

·          Assist the Administrative Director as required

·          Perform other jobs as required by the Camp Director

·          Always handle parent inquiries in a polite, knowledgeable, and firm manner

 

LOGISTICS COORDINATOR

Purpose: The overall responsibility is to make sure the day-to-day equipment is where it needs to be.  Responsible for activities & special day set-up.  It is the equivalent of a 7-week position; camp, orientation & set-up before camps begins.  Candidate needs to have a high school degree.

Specific Responsibilities:

·          Pre-camp set-up: take canoes and paddles to black pond, set-up tables & chairs in art studio, wash out coolers, get keys & walkie talkies from Bob

·          Before each day begins take a water cooler, cups & trash bags to each activity location (check coolers once during the day to make sure they do not need to be refilled)

·          Pick up snacks each day around 10:00 in the dining hall and bring to the camp office in Hurd

·          At the end of each day make sure all coolers and trash are picked up

·          Set-up for any cookouts and/or campouts: tents, grill, water, food (1 cookout and 2 campouts per session)

·          After campouts the next morning make sure there is no trash left at campsite and bring all tents back to camp closet

·          Special events days will be once per session and assistant for program development will need assistance from logistics

·          To assist administrative team when ever needed

·          To attend all staff training and meetings
