High moral standards, including no, drugs, smoking, inappropriate language. • Outstanding character and integrity. • Neat and professional appearance: No visible tattoos or body piercings. • Desire, commitment, and ability to work with young people. • Enthusiasm for the outdoors and the program Camp Shane offers. • Compatibility with camp philosophy and mission. • Leadership and supervision skills. • Concern for safety and well-being of others. • Positive attitude and outlook. • Ability to communicate and work with children and provide necessary instruction. • Ability to seek and accept supervision and guidance. • Accepting of diversity in religions, ethnicity, culture, and race. • Able to treat all campers and staff fairly. • Agree to a criminal background check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check. Responsible to: Head Counselor General Responsibilities: To identify and meet campers' and staff needs. "A group leader must be, at different times, a supervisor, a teacher, a parent, a brother or sister, and a best friend." Overall responsibilities are to supervise approximately twelve staff and forty campers in your division. Make sure all campers and staffs are where they are meant to be. Keep head staff aware of current situations Specific Responsibilities, but not limited to: • Supervises the division including all campers and general counselors. • Makes sure that general counselors carry out their responsibilities, and offer direction and guidance when necessary. • Makes sure that all campers are attending their activities and that all of their needs are being taken care of. • At the beginning of each activity period goes through the division's bunks making sure all lights, radios, etc. have been closed and all water is shut off. • Circulates to the division's activities making sure all staff and campers are present and the program is functioning. • During inspection makes sure the bunks are neat, orderly, and in a condition that provides for safe healthy living. • Acts as an arbitrator and mediator in disputes between counselors, campers, or campers and counselors • Meets with the head counselor on a daily basis. • Helps to plan and run evening activities and special events. • Acts as trip leader on divisional outings. • Responsible for assigning days off for the division's counselors, as well as the daily schedules for the division's general counselors. • Responsible for attending to behavioral problems in the division. • Responsible for handling counselor problems and for dealing with specific staff problems, including non performance of responsibilities. • Acts as a Head Area OD and helps to coordinate the OD team. Sees that camp is closed up for the night. • Acts as a positive role model for campers. • Gets to know their campers. • Makes sure that camper's healthy and clean. • Follow through with all required paperwork, including weekly cabin reports and personal notes to parents. • Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group. • Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns. • Ability to observe camper behavior assesses its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques as trained by camp. • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities. • Able to assist campers in an emergency (Fire, evacuation, illness, or injury). • Able to follow, observe, and enforce all camp safety regulations. • Carry out other duties as designated.
