ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.
Position Scope Factors:
Below
are the MAJOR offerings for the summer of 2012. Job requirements as they
specifically apply to the Majors below can be found at the end of this
document.
MAJOR #1: Fashion Design and Merchandising
The Ultimate Goal:
Campers will develop a fashion line and create a merchandising plan that
will be presented to fashion industry representatives.
Campers will discover
their inner “fashion-ista” as they explore the world
of Fashion Design and Merchandising! They will unleash their creative talents
and unique style sense, as they create designs for high-tech sports apparel,
glamorous formal wear, versatile handbags and accessories, or an adorable
children’s line! With experienced designers as their inspiration, campers will
develop prototypes of their design ideas while learning many aspects of the
fashion design including color theory, drawing techniques, pattern creation,
textile and fabric design, and more. Campers will also explore other areas of
the Fashion Industry such as current and past fashion trends, developing an
effective brand, and creating a marketing strategy to expose their
extraordinary one-of-a kind creations to the real-world!
MAJOR #2: Industrial Design and Product Innovation
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will take their team’s design
solution from idea to prototype and present it to a panel of industry
representatives.
Campers will embark
on a design adventure and explore real-life problems that can be solved through
creative design and innovative thinking. Have you ever thought of an awesome
invention that would make life easier? Campers will become a creative force on
their team and devise a design solution for their “client’s” specific need.
Campers will explore a broad range of ideas as they develop and refine their
prototypes in order to meet the needs of their end-user and the capabilities of
their manufacturer. Whether they are creating an ergonomic piece of furniture, a
new type of kitchen appliance, or a sleek new automobile design, campers will
experience the design process first-hand and learn what it takes to design,
build, produce and package products that we use every day.
MAJOR #3: Sports Business and Entrepreneurship
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will create their own sports franchise or business, or
pitch a new idea to an existing pro team or organization, and present their
project to a panel of experts.
There’s a whole team
of people working behind the scenes of every pro sports game, and endless
possibilities to get involved in the sports world, even if you’re not a
professional athlete. When you join this team, you will discover opportunities
in sports marketing, franchise management and other sports-related businesses
through interaction with special guests and exciting field trips to major
sports organizations like the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Union
pro soccer team.
MAJOR #4: CSI Forensics
The Ultimate Goal: Armed with their crime scene kit, campers will analyze a
sophisticated crime scene and present their evidence in a simulated courtroom
where professional Crime Scene Investigators will judge their conclusions.
Campers will immerse
themselves in hands-on forensic science, as they are challenged with the task
of unraveling complicated clues at a mock crime scene investigation. As part of
an investigatory team, campers will learn about the process for the collection
and preservation of evidence, crime scene reconstruction, fingerprinting
techniques, forensic photography, splatter analysis and more! Campers will also
learn how write and maintain detailed reports, interview witnesses, and prepare
evidence for a mock trial. With their team, campers will also explore forensic
technology and criminal justice practices as they go behind the scenes of an
actual crime lab with real professional forensic scientists and crime scene
investigators.
MAJOR #5: Animal Advocates: Discover the World of
Primates
The Ultimate Goal:
Campers will develop a positive advocacy
campaign or conservation action plan designed to protect and preserve
Orangutans.
Campers will learn
how to protect and preserve threatened and endangered animals that share our world
as they become a positive wildlife animal advocate for change! With their team,
they will become part of a conservation initiative to save the Orangutans.
Among the largest of all living primates, these magnificent animals are amidst
the most endangered! Campers will learn about the growing threats and most
pressing issues facing them today, and discover how they can help save these
amazing apes from extinction. The experience will be highlighted by a trip to
the Philadelphia Zoo where campers will work with Zoo educators, be exposed to
their expert resources, and be inspired by their resident primates and other
animal species!
MAJOR #6: Community
Outreach: Making a Difference!
The Ultimate Goal:
Campers will create a unique and authentic
service experience that addresses a need in society, and present it to a panel
of community leaders. (Note: Campers will earn community service hours.)
Giving of oneself to
help others in need is one of the most powerful and important things we can do
to contribute to a healthy society. Every person has the power to be an agent
of change and make a difference. By meeting leaders of community projects and
learning about incredible local programs (maybe closer to home than you
realize!), campers will see first-hand how even small initiatives can have a
huge impact.
