The Central Alabama Council The Central Alabama (formerly Birmingham Area) Council was founded by Tish Spaulding Oden in 1959 and received its national charter in 1964. Although started as an all-girl club program, this council very early on developed response programs needed in the local communities. Because we were serving so many boys, while the official name was still "Camp Fire Girls," we were known locally as "Camp Fire Youth." After national membership was opened to boys, the organization became Camp Fire Boys and Girls. In the fall off 2001, after three years of brand analysis to revitalize and strengthen the identity central to the organization's mission of building caring, confident youth and future leaders, the organization became Camp Fire USA. Over the years, this council has been honored with many national and local awards.
