week 3 • Artist Books • Grades 6–8 July 11-15 • 9 am–3 pm | $375
Books are a great medium for young artists who love collage, illustration, comics, writing and other mixed media. In this workshop you will learn traditional bookbinding techniques, view original artwork in Kala’s collection and gallery, and talk to working artists. Through observational drawing, watercolor studies, and collage, students design and develop content for their own artist book. A variety of forms will be explored such as accordion books, tunnel books, flipbooks, Coptic binding, and much, much more!
weeks 4 & 5 • High School Printmaking Intensive • Grades 9–12 • July 18-29 •
10 am–4 pm | $375/wk or $675/2wks
The High School Printmaking Intensive is a two-week long series of workshops focused on four distinct areas and applications of printmaking. Students may enroll in one or both weeks.
week 4 • July 18-22
Drawing for Printmakers This workshop will introduce the language of line and explore the variety of marks possible through relief and Intaglio techniques. We will also examine the distinction between the immediate drawn line and working from a prepared image to experience the unique range of expression in printmaking.
Color & Monotype Color is essential to the way we understand the world. In this workshop we will explore the complexities of color while making beautiful monoprints. Learn the basics of color theory by exploring its properties, relations and abilities to produce optical effects. Throughout the week you will learn to communicate through color by understanding the physical and cultural effects that color has on our daily lives.
week 5 • July 25-29
Book Arts Showcase your artwork in book form. In this workshop you will learn traditional bookbinding techniques and stitches to create your own artist book. Learn how to make accordion books, tunnel books, flip books, Coptic binding and more! Incorporate the prints you made in week 1 or transform archival images and found materials into your book vision.
Experimental Printmaking Loosen up and explore the broad possibilities of experimental printmaking. Using both digital and analog technologies, students will explore cyanotype, polyester plate lithography, and layered stenciling techniques. Mix and match traditional and digital processes with experimental forms to transform drawn, painted and printed work in new and unexpected ways.
Professional Development for Educators • Access Points to Printmaking •
August 15, 17 & 19 (3 days: Mon, Wed, Fri) • 10 am–3 pm | $225
Join us for a three-day printmaking workshop where you will explore monotype, Intaglio, and relief printing. Incorporate stencil, collage and masking techniques to add layers to your printed work. You will use printing presses and practice simple hand burnishing techniques that will allow you to teach printmaking in any classroom.
Model lessons will be presented from multiple perspectives demonstrating the ways in which the printing process can be paired with an existing curriculum or presented independently. Particular emphasis will be placed on energizing your own artistic practice while learning new techniques that will be accessible to your students. We will discuss resources, materials and concepts to add to your toolbox of projects.
This class satisfies an elective credit for the Arts Integration Specialist Certificate Program.
