Citrus Heights, a relatively new city between Sacramento and Roseville, has numerous parks, playgrounds, and schools, making it a family friendly place to live and visit. Modern shopping and business areas host outdoor movie nights, farmers markets, and unique special events throughout the year. Water activities for the kids are a short jaunt away, like the Sacramento River for tubing or having a picnic and swimming at Folsom Lake. Check out our online directory and find a Citrus Heights summer camp where the kids can beat the heat and have a ball.

A summer favorite is rafting down the river with American River Recreation. This rafting company has been riding the rivers since the 1970's and are well-respected with guides who are trained to keep your family safe. Lifejackets, helmets, and paddles are all provided on half-day and full-day trips down the river. The resort base camp is private and has a pool, volleyball court, hot showers, and a horse shoe pit. You can choose to relax here before and after your trip. Kids will love chowing down on sandwiches or whatever delicious lunch the guides have prepared beside the river.

Enjoy wide open spaces at Stock Ranch Nature Preserve, made up of 47 acres of nature and 1.5 miles of walking paths, along the Arcade and San Juan creeks. The kids will enjoy the sight of all the flora and fauna in the area and crossing over the wooden bridges throughout the preserve. The city is currently updating bikeways throughout and adding bike lanes to the surrounding roads. Bring a packed lunch for the family and enjoy the sounds of birds in the surrounding trees. Feel free to explore the nature beyond the paths, but remember to keep this nature preserve clean.

Watch important parts of the fish life cycle at Nimbus Fish Hatchery, where Chinook salmon and steelheads are raised for release into the American River. Kids can feed the fish in the raceways or explore the fun and engaging visitor's center that has massive, interactive fish and river displays. Several times a week, egg-taking is done on the spawning deck and can be seen through a viewing window. The fish ladder is especially exciting, as you get to watch the mighty fish jumping up each step. Afterwards enjoy a walk down the trail along the river or take your bikes out on the bike trail.
