Nestled in the valley of San Diego County, El Cajon, California is a thriving city for families of all kinds to explore, learn, and play. Meander among the flowers and butterflies at the Water Conservation Garden, get acquainted with the old American West at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center, or enjoy a cup of cocoa and candle-making classes at Summers Past Farms. Check out our online directory for exciting camp opportunities in El Cajon!

The Water Conservation Garden is a great place for a picnic, nature, and hands-on learning. You and your little one will delight in touring any number of the 12 exhibits offered, such as the Sensory Garden, full of plants with sensory qualities such as scents and soft touches; the Butterfly Pavilion, featuring a diverse array of native Southern Californian butterflies; or the Cactus Garden, displaying succulents and cacti from around the world. Top off the day with more beauty, enjoying a picnic in the rose-lined Gazebo. Even better, every exhibit is in place to educate the public on water conservation practices and to inspire innovative planting and gardening techniques. Cowboys and cowgirls of all ages will love learning about the Old West at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center. The museum shares the art, life, and legacy of El Cajon resident, Olaf Wieghorst, the self-taught painter from the American West dubbed the “Dean of Western Painters". You and your family will get the unique opportunity to explore the history of Cowboys, American Indians, Pioneers, and much more, through both performance and visual art.  Click here for information on upcoming events and exhibits.

For a day of whimsy, look no further than the Summer Past Farms. A Certified Wildlife Habitat, the majestic gardens of the farm are full of local wildlife as well as friendly resident cats and dogs. Spend the day learning to make crafts at one of many workshops, sip organic coffee from the Green Bean Coffee Bar, or get lost in beauty as you navigate the Sweet Pea Maze. A highly festive place, Summer Past Farms is specially decorated for every season—draped in twinkle lights during the winter holidays, it’s a great opportunity to pick up holiday gifts for the family; or come by during spring and summer to marvel at the sweet miniature fairy gardens designed by local children and adults.
