If you are looking for a variety of kid-focused activities that are both fun and educational, then the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum is an excellent resource. Their programs, catered to kids of all ages, are intended to make the process of learning as interactive as possible, and their 13,000 square foot facility ensures it. Home to 40 ongoing and "please touch" exhibit areas, which range in topics from the bellies of whales, to dinosaurs, to incredible engineering machines, make exploration endless. They also offer weekly programs with different activities each day. From storytelling, to worldly arts and crafts, to scientific experiments, and free-form artistic ventures, their lessons are engaging and meaningful. Make sure to visit their monthly calendar for even more stimulating opportunities.
While Santa Maria has much to do on the ground, it also offers very unique opportunities for those interested in flying. At the Santa Maria Museum of Flight kids are encouraged to venture into every aspect of aviation. A program in airplane modeling for ages 7-12 allows children to investigate the ins and outs of planes, teaching them to understand their composition, and to create their own unique models. The Museum boasts a nice collection of planes from around the world, as well as fly-ins during the 3rd Saturday of each month (January-July/September-November). And if you can make it to Santa Maria in August, be sure to attend their annual Thunder Over the Valley Air Show.
For those interested in theater and entertainment, The Santa Maria Civic Theatre has developed a unique summer season that brings different fairytales to life. With a track-record of more than twenty years, their live-theater will allow your kids to step into a world of make-believe and get lost in the wonders of strange worlds. Their world-class performances will make your suspension of disbelief easier than ever before.
