Vallejo, in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a great city for kids. A family favorite, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, is right around the corner, with thrilling rides and memories and laughs that will last forever. Being close to the bay also means a multitude of ridge hikes and trails and the proximity to various colleges leads to many cultural and diverse events to inspire and educate the kids. Vallejo also hosts eclectic farmer's markets, live music, and weekends on the waterfront, throughout the year, that are full of family fun. So, take a look at our online directory for Vallejo and make your child's summer dreams come true.

Ahoy, mates! Grab your sword and eye patch and take the kids to the quirky Pirate Festival, held at Waterfront Park, in the summer. Over 30,000 people show up for costume contests, treasure hunts, cannon battles, and mermaids swimming in a lagoon! Young pirates can take "swashbuckling classes" or practice boarding a ship on the Zipline of Insanity. Sing shantys; learn how to tie a knot, or slide down an octopus slide called The Kraken. There will also be pirate-themed wares being sold and some delicious high seas delicacies for the family to enjoy at the end of the day.

Go to the newest events and find the best sports programs for your children throughGVRD, or Greater Vallejo Recreation District. In October and November, transport the family to a fairytale land called Children's Wonderland, which has a pumpkin carriage, a castle guarded by crocs, and new playgrounds. Kid's Club, an after-school program, is offered for students ages kindergarten through 5th grade. Aquatics camps and after-school swimming are taught by fully-licensed lifeguards at the Cunningham Aquatic Complex. They also have a Jr. Lifeguard camp for kids to learn the basics of saving lives, like CPR and first aid.

Take advantage of the great outdoors at GVRD First Saturdays at River Park, Wilson Ave, and Mare Island Causeway. All these parks hold free activities on the first Saturday of the month, like hikes and various nature events. The kids can enjoy running around or looking through the leaves for little creatures. Just in time for spooky fall, there are ghost tours on First Street and Sonoma Plaza, where kids can pretend to be ghoulish detectives. Go on a ghost walk, learn about the past, and become a real ghost hunter.
