Ventura is a playground for kids who love sun, sand, and surf. When you're between Malibu, Santa Barbara, and the Pacific Ocean, life is pretty good. Back in 1782, Father Junipero named the mission in the area, Santa Buenaventura, meaning that Ventura is the city of "good fortune." When your family is here, they can enjoy a multitude of fun activities by the beach, out on the ocean, or along the coast. Peruse our online directory and find a summer camp in Ventura that will keep a smile on your child's face long after it's over.

Known as the Galapagos Islands, the Channel Islands are a great day trip, as they are only fourteen miles out to sea. These five islands are a quiet, peaceful place to hike with the family, see dolphins, go whale watching, or go snorkeling. Ocean life is all around and kids will love seeing colorful fish or a glimpse of the majestic whales from the island or a boat. If you'd like to do an overnight trip, check out the camping grounds on Santa Cruz island, which have guided kayaking and snorkeling programs. Be sure to sit back and look up at the stars above to end a fun-filled day.

If your kids want to learn how to sail, then the City of Ventura Leo Robbins Community Sailing Center is the place to go. Located in the Ventura Harbor, this national-award winning sailing and kayaking school has American Sailing Association certified instructors that will keep your child safe and teach them the correct techniques. Courses run from beginning to advanced sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding. The introduction to sailing experience is $60 for three family members and includes an afternoon of learning the basics and sailing the water with a professional. Bring some snacks on board for a day on the water!

The Ventura Beach Bike Trail gives a tour of Ventura's coastline while keeping your family active and having fun. The bike trail starts near the mouth of the Ventura River, at a free parking lot, and passes the fairgrounds on its way to the ocean. Soon enough you'll see the river and ocean meeting and get to see the beauty of the bird estuary, where many pelicans like to hang out. Your next stop should be Surfer's Point, a popular surfing area, and the promenade which is full of local artists. The kids will love seeing the surfing action and searching for a keepsake near downtown. The trail goes quite a ways but you may choose to end your trip at the Ventura Pier for a picturesque sunset.
