Walnut Creek has been around for more than 100 years and yet, it has the most open space per capita in California. There are over 3,000 acres of oak trees, grassland savannah, and chaparral for visitors and families to enjoy. Besides connecting with nature, Walnut Creek also keeps it modern. This northern California city is close to San Francisco and can access it easily through BART, but has its own thriving arts and culture scene. Our online directory has camps that will provide your child with opportunities to explore the diversity of Walnut Creek, both indoors and out.

Go back in time and experience life on a ranch at Borges Ranch, a former pioneer home. Children can explore an old blacksmith shop, farm equipment displays and a good old fashioned barn. Many animals are cared for at Borges Ranch by 4-H. Animals like goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens, that all mill around the hillsides and enjoy the open space. The kids will love interacting with them all. This being a ranch, there are even cattle in old fashioned corrals. The ranch also includes covered trellises for a shady break and the Bob Pond Activity Area, which has a pond, picnic tables, lawn, and amphitheater.

Become a thespian at Young REP Theater Workshop, a program that trains and develops acting students. It is in its 43rd year and is the perfect choice for a child who wants to make a career in the arts. For six weeks, students meet every weekday. They take multiple master classes; including ensemble performance, audition technique, improvisation, and playwriting. Basic acting classes are taught as well. The instructors are professionals from the theater world like directors, actors, coaches, playwrights, and technicians. At the end, the students perform in a huge showcase at the Lesher Center for the Arts.

Stop and smell the roses at the Ruth Bancroft Garden. This garden aims to preserve its lovely garden design and to cultivate water-saving plants. You are surrounded with beautiful plants like protea, aloe, and many South African and Mexican plants. A two-hour field trip for children is offered and can be adapted to all ages. Students will tour the garden to understand the history, pollination, and water storage of these plants. Children will be astounded to hear the native uses of plants and will become knowledgeable in their plant identification. Every student will get to plant a succulent cutting to take home!
