Enliven your child's imagination this summer in Wichita, Kansas. Experience a wilderness like no other at the Great Plains Nature Center, get lost in the magic of Keeper of the Plains, or get up close with animals at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
Connect with Mother Nature at the Great Plains Nature Center, which houses all sorts of grassland mammals, birds, fish, snakes, and much more. Your kids will love the story times about wildlife, as well as the free arts and crafts workshops with an emphasis on nature. Cultivate their inner scientist at Naturalist in the Know, where every week kids will learn about topics such as insects, food chains, and amphibian life cycles. With other family activities like moon hikes and free classes on seasonal changes and weather, it may be hard to choose where to start.
Introduce your children to an element of magic as they see the Keeper of the Plains. This area features at 74-foot tall sculpture in downtown Wichita that unites the little and big Arkansas Rivers. Here, you and your kids can learn about the history of the Native American tribes who still gather at this site today with elements such as medicinal herbs and yucca to give a feeling of authenticity. Little ones can also go on a scavenger hunt for the sculpture of a troll which sits on the east side of the Arkansas River. Kids will be thrilled to learn that trolls come alive during the night and turn back to stone during the day.
Go wild at Sedgwick County Zoo. This awesome facility offers exhibits featuring wild animals from all over the world as well as children's farms perfect for an up-close experience. Feed the friendly elephant Stephanie with her favorite crunchy carrots, or take one of the many classes offered that include fun activities such as arts and crafts. Get in on a Creature Campout, where your children can take a nighttime tour of the zoo then sleepover for a fun-filled and memorable experience. With summer enrichment programs for teenagers as well as children of all ages, your kids will not want to miss out on all the adventure.
