Boasting an urban metropolis, lush forests, and sandy beaches, New York is as diverse as it is beautiful. Jump into the wild by scaling mountains or seeing the falls, explore what the city has to offer by visiting some of its greatest monuments, or revel in the museums that offer a wide array of activities.
Dive into the "Grand Canyon of the East" at Letchworth State Park, where waterfalls among 600-foot tall cliffs make for stunning vistas. Your children will love the opportunity to kayak down the rapids, hike and bike around 66 miles of trails, and get a sky-high view from a hot air balloon. Take in the verdant, hilly countryside of the Adirondack Mountains, where you and your family can fish for bass, tour a castle of ice, camp on an island, or even visit castles and shipwrecks on the Adirondack Seaway. If your kids still haven't gotten enough adventure, consider visiting Niagara Falls, where scenic boat rides on the roaring waters are sure to stun.
Spend some quality time in the city, where a Staten Island Ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty means fun for the whole family. Your kids will get a kick out of the boat horn blasting, and will stand in awe as they see America's most iconic symbol up-close and personal. Let your kids discover and understand the events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the memorial and museum. Don't forget to climb up to the observation deck on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building for a truly famous view from any angle. Take it to the next level and challenge the kids to a race up to the top, guaranteed to burn off that extra energy.
Cultivate your kid's creative side at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where family programs such as Sunday Studio and Art Play encourage children of all ages to paint, sculpt, and dabble in all kinds of arts and crafts. Equally stunning is the Museum of Modern Art, which offers programs for children ages 4-14. Join in on a session of Storytelling Through Art, or watch and discuss family-friendly films. When they're ready to get their wiggles out, take your little ones to The Strong National Museum of Play, which inspires education through everything from puppetry to dress up.
